As we head into Earth Month (or April), how can educators engage students with this critical issue? This April, the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) is helping overworked teachers, from every subject, bring climate change into the classroom. This opportunity is not just for environmental science classes. [...]

My Close Encounter with Sir Lex

Dr. Felix Librero or Sir Lex as we fondly call him here at the University of the Philippines Open University ( UPOU) passed away on 16 March 2021.  I was blown away by the news. I learned of this sad news early morning a day later, and later learned that he was cremated that day with only the closest of his family and friends.  I realized that I have not been seeing his posts on Facebook for a while. He has not been well this past month, as Ms. Jegs, his wife,  has shared in a Facebook post.  I have [...]

Professor Emeritus Felix Librero writes 30

“At some point in one’s life, death is the only thing that must happen.” This was how Professor Emeritus Felix Librero concluded one of his musings on the subject of death in his blog, Connecting, back in February 2017. While his was a matter-of-fact declaration of a universal truth, its simplicity and directness did not take away from the complexity of human emotion that resulted from the news of his passing on March 16. Sadness, shock, disbelief, regret. These were only some of the reactions people expressed when they learned that he was gone. He succumbed to liver cirrhosis at the [...]
