The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) welcomed its new students for the academic year 2021-2022 through a student orientation program which premiered on 11 October 2021, 10:00 AM live via the UPOU Facebook Page

Mr. Danilo Concepcion, President of the University of the Philippines System, delivered the opening speech by reminding the new Isko and Iska to uphold freedom of speech, honor, and excellence, especially at these trying times.

Dr. Melinda Dela Peña Bandalaria also addressed the new cyber scholars and reminded them that as independent online learners of the UPOU, “great power comes with great responsibility,” hence doing assignments and required projects must be done in all honesty. Moreover, she emphasized that UPOU students are not alone in  their stay in the Open University—as the officials, faculty, and the staff are ready to traverse with them especially  in the midst of this pandemic.

In the past years, new UPOU students were welcomed both physically in the UPOU campus and were given campus tour as well as virtually through live streaming  However due to the current public health crisis, the program was done purely virtual including the virtual campus tour that showcased the University’s buildings, facilities and cultural landmarks.

New students were also oriented about the use of the MyPortal, UPOU’s Learning Management System (LMS),  that they will use to access their classes, forums, and submit their assignments and other course requirements. The new students were also oriented on the UPOU library and how to avail of online resources

As independent and self-directed learners, the new students  were also encouraged to maximize the self-help functionality of   the UPOU Helpdesk through the existing frequently asked questions and article solutions

Each Faculty Office—Faculty of Management and Development Studies, Faculty of Education, and the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies— also welcomed their new students to help with their specific queries and concerns about their respective programs.
