MAN Students conduct "Sakit ay Iwasan, Wastong Kaalaman ang Paraan" seminarStudents of the Master of Arts in Nursing (MAN) program under the Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS), UP Open University (UPOU) held a seminar entitled "Sakit ay Iwasan, Wastong Kaalaman ang Paraan" at the Audio Visual Room, UPOU Headquarters, Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines on 20 April 2016.
This activity was held as part of the requirement for the Intensive Experience in Adult Health Nursing (N219.6) course. Its objective was to enrich people's awareness of common lifestyle diseases such as cancer, hypertension, diabetes and heart diseases, as well as discuss its causes, effects and precautionary measures for prevention and further development of the diseases.
Dr. Primo Garcia, Dean of FMDS, welcomed the students and participants and congratulated their initiatives for the knowledge and benefit of locals of Los Baños, Laguna. The students discussed various topics: Non Communicable Diseases by Marvin Arlos; Hypertension by Liliana Marie Mabaet; Diabetes Mellitus by Maita Gretchen Najera; and Heart Diseases by Mercy Joy Lubiano. The Basics of Cancer was delivered by Mary Ann Reyes , Karen Paclibar discussed the Cautions for Cancer and the Referral was done by Marlene Estrella. Dr. Araceli Balabagno, the N219.6 Faculty-in-Charge, delivered the closing remarks. John Carlo Estrevencion served as the Master of Ceremonies.
Part of this seminar was a free physical health check which included blood pressure monitoring, body mass index (BMI) computation and random blood tests. It was attended by the officials and health workers from different Barangays in the municipality of Los Baños together with staff and officials of the UPOU. The students also provided several Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials related to lifestyles diseases for the barangays in Los Baños.
The MAN students involved in the conduct of the seminar came from UP-PGH and hospitals from Ilocos Norte, Quezon province, some parts of Visayas and Mindanao, and from the United Arab Emirates. The seminar was organized through the efforts of the students and supervision of Dr. Araceli Balabagno, Prof. Quennie Redulme, Program Chair of MAN program and Prof. Rita Ramos, Secretary to the Faculty of FMDS.
