The ARUGA Para sa Batang May Cancer (ABC), a Web-Based Palliative Care Service Provider initiative by the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS), conducted the Let’s Talk It Over (LTIO) on Overview of Palliative Care and Its Role in Cancer Care Management on 18 January 2019 at the Performing Arts Hall, UP Cebu.

FMDS Dean Primo G. Garcia welcomed the attendees through a video message while Asst. Prof. Queenie R. Ridulme, Program Chair of Master of Arts in Nursing (MAN) program and project staff of the ABC Initiative, delivered the opening remarks to officially start the program.

Dr. Marlon G. Saria, a Registered Nurse (RN), Clinical Nurse Specialist, Advanced Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist, Lecturer under the MAN program and a leading expert in the Palliative Care from John Wayne Cancer Institute, Providence Saint John’s Health Center, Santa Monica, California served as the resource person of the lecture. Dr. Saria provided an overview of the Palliative Care with emphasis on Cancer Care Management. He shared information on Global Palliative-Hospice activities and discussed the two different constructs – Palliative Care and Hospice Care. He discussed the definition, goals, key components, domains, and competencies, healthcare disparities and standards in Palliative Care. Before the lecture ends, Dr. Saria shared some of the best practices on what to say and what not to say when dealing with patients who need palliative care. He also emphasized that “Palliative Care is not only for those actively dying but also for those active living.”

The speaker and the audience engaged in a discussion on palliative care management after the lecture. The LTIO provided a venue for the attendees to ask questions, clarify information and share experiences on palliative care and end of life crisis in their respective institutions and workplace.

The forum was attended by doctors, practitioners, and members of palliative care team from Cebu Normal University, Kythe Foundation, Inc., Perpetual Succour Hospital – Cebu Cancer Institute, University of Cebu Medical Center, Talisay District Hospital and Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center.
