In addressing the critical need for qualified nursing faculty in the Philippines, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) recently conducted a three-day curricular activity aimed at enhancing the capacity of higher education institutions to offer the Master in Nursing Education (MNE) Program. This is a pioneering initiative to handle the growing demand for nursing professionals, in support of CHED’s Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 5, s. 2024.
Held from 11 July to 13 July 2024, the event brought together deans, program coordinators, and faculty members from State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and Private Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs) across the country. The objective was to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the MNE Program’s core concepts, including its outcomes, objectives, and content.
The program opened with a welcome message from Dr. Cherrie Melanie Ancheta Diego, Director IV of the Office of Programs and Standards Development at CHED. This was followed by a detailed orientation led by Prof. Arnold B. Peralta from the UP Manila College of Nursing, setting the stage for the intensive sessions that followed.
Over the course of three days, participants engaged in a series of inputs and workshops designed to delve into the MNE Program’s, curricular framework, and program outcomes.
The introduction to the MNE Program’s rationale and goals was given by Dr. Milabel Ho, Chairperson of the CHED Technical Panel for Nursing Education, and an overview of curriculum design by Dean Sheila R. Bonito from the UP Manila College of Nursing.
These were followed by workshops focused on translating program outcomes into course designs, facilitated by Prof. Arnold Peralta and his team. Discussion on the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), led by Dr. Mary Grace Lacanaria, and a session on scholarship opportunities for the MNE Program by Dir. Corinna Frances Cabanilla from CHED’s Local Graduate Scholarship Office was conducted during the last day of the event.
The event concluded with a synthesis session and a presentation of the next steps by Ms. Aline G. Magalong, Director III of the Office of Programs and Standards Development. Participants left with a clearer vision and practical tools to implement the MNE Program in their respective institutions in support of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well Being; 4: Quality Education; 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth; and 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
