UPOU Faculty Speaks at Workshop for De La Salle Lipa Administrators

Assistant Professor Blancaflor P. Arada, UP Open University (UPOU) faculty member under the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS) and Program Chair for the Master of Information Systems, served as the resource person for a professional development training organized by De La Salle Lipa for its academic administrators. This was held on 23 May 2024 at De La Salle Lipa in Lipa City, Batangas.

In the workshop titled “Introduction to AI Framework, Using AI, and Writing AI Guides and Policies for Education,” Asst. Prof. Arada gave an overview of how Artificial Intelligence (AI) transforms education, illustrating its potential to personalize learning and optimize administrative processes. She explained key AI concepts relevant to education, including machine learning, natural language processing, and data analytics. Asst. Prof. Arada emphasized the administrators’ role in AI integration and highlighted their influence on policy-making and resource allocation. The participants discussed the benefits and challenges of AI adoption in education. These insights were instrumental in beginning to craft an AI framework specific to education, tailored to the unique needs and goals of De La Salle Lipa.

The second part of the workshop focused on the importance of establishing an AI framework for writing clear guidelines and policies. Asst. Prof. Arada outlined the key components of effective AI guides and policies, including ethical considerations, data privacy, and stakeholder engagement. She also shared some practical tips for writing and implementing AI guides and policies in educational institutions, including stakeholder consultation, iterative policy development, and transparent communication.

The workshop culminated in brainstorming sessions for an AI Framework that encapsulated the vision and strategy for AI integration at De La Salle Lipa. Through the workshop, De La Salle Lipa hoped to be able to draft their AI Guides and Policies, which would lead to a roadmap for ethical and effective AI use within the university. Overall, the workshop was a success as it fostered a collaborative environment where DLSL academic leaders could envision the future of AI in education.
