UPOU Employees Attend Synchronized Flag Raising Ceremony to Open UP’s Linggo ng Unibersidad

On 10 June 2024, the University of the Philippines (UP) opened the Linggo ng Unibersidad with a synchronized flag-raising ceremony across all UP Constituent Units (CUs). While the main program was held at the Quezon Hall in UP Diliman, all eight UP CUs, including the UP Open University (UPOU), participated in the event via Zoom. At UPOU, the ceremony was held simultaneously at the CCDL Auditorium at the UPOU Headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna, and at the MC Theater of the DICT Building in Diliman, Quezon City.

Linggo ng Unibersidad carried the theme “Hayag: Pagpupugay sa mga Lingkod Bayan 2024” to celebrate the 116th founding anniversary of UP. The event will run from 10 to 20 June 2024. This is the first Linggo ng Unibersidad that UP has organized, led by the Office of the Vice President for Public Affairs, with TVUP for the synchronized flag-raising ceremony.

UP President Angelo A. Jimenez delivered the welcome remarks, sharing that the Linggo ng Unibersidad is an opportunity for UP to honor, pay tribute to, and recognize every sector of the UP community—students, new professional alumni, retired staff members, employees, and agency personnel, especially those who demonstrated honor and excellence in service to the nation. He encouraged all UP constituents to be reminded of the reason for the university’s existence, which is to serve the nation. He ended his message with a quote from the first President of UP, Murray Simon Bartlett, saying, “UP can serve the world best if it serves the Filipino people.”

All UP Chancellors and head of CUs also gave their messages of support. These include Chancellor Edgardo Carlo L. Vistan II of UP Diliman, Chancellor Jose V. Camacho, Jr., of UP Los Baños, Chancellor Michael L. Tee of UP Manila, Chancellor Clement C. Camposano of UP Visayas, Chancellor Lyre Anni E. Murao of UP Mindanao, Chancellor Joel M. Addawe of UP Baguio, Chancellor Leo B. Malagar of UP Cebu and Dean Patricia B. Arinto of UP Tacloban. UP Open University Chancellor Melinda dela Peña Bandalaria, in her message, congratulated UP for its 116th founding anniversary and extended UPOU’s continuous support to the entire UP System to serve the nation. Special cultural performances were then presented by the UP Manila Belle, UP LB Sandayaw CUltural Group, the UPV Babaylan Dance, and the UP Mindanao Dance Ensemble.

At UPOU, a memo was released for everyone to participate in the event. All offices were represented at the CCDL Auditorium, and fourteen UPOU faculty and staff also attended at the MC Theater at the DICT Building in Diliman, Quezon City. The event concluded with breakfast, which was served to everyone who attended.
