The ASEANnale 2018, which brings together two events: The 1st ASEAN Film and Multimedia Competition and Exhibition and the 2nd International Symposium on ASEAN Studies (ISAS), was held at the Asian Center, UP Diliman in Quezon City, Philippines from February 28 to March 2.
With the theme, “Capturing the spirit of ASEAN in the Digital Times,” this ASEAN biannale focused on three current concerns shared and addressed by numerous parties in the region—Diaspora, Disasters and Democracy. It aimed to promote collaboration among ASEAN academicians, experts, multimedia artists, filmmakers, and scholars in relation to the use of films and multimedia materials in tackling the three current concerns.

Opening ceremonies, opening of the exhibit, director’s forum, and the 1st plenary and parallel sessions and film and multimedia screening for Diaspora were conducted in the first day of the conference followed by a welcome dinner for guests and participants. The 2nd and 3rd plenary and parallel sessions and film and multimedia screening for Disasters and Democracy were done on the 2nd day. The invited keynote speakers were H.E. Elizabeth P. Buensuceso, Permanent Representative of the Philippines to ASEAN; and Dr. Brenda S.A. Yeoh, Professor at the Department of Geography, National University of Singapore.

The ASEANnale 2018 was concluded on the 3rd day with the closing ceremonies and the announcement of winners. The ASEANnale Distinguished Award for Higher Education was given to Prof. Dr. Atwi Suparman of the Universitas Terbuka, Indonesia. For the ASEANnale 2018 Best Paper Awards, three papers received distinctions as honorable mentions:

  • Examining the Philippines’ State in the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road: A Competition of Old and New Financial Players by Jim Duran, Far Eastern University
  • Community Media for Climate Change Resilience in Southeast Asia: Experiences of Thailand, Laos and the Philippines by Mark Lester M. Chico and Benjamina Paula G. Flor, University of the Philippines Los Baños
  • Understanding the Socio-cultural Lynchpin of ASEAN Regional Cooperation on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) in Philippine perspective by Danilo Santos Cortez, Jr., University of the Philippines Diliman

The winner of the 2018 Best Paper Award was Wendell Glenn P. Cagape from Centro Escolar University for his paper “Finding Foucault in the Rohingya Discourses.”

Likewise, the winners of the ASEANnale Film and Multimedia Competition, these were the entries who were given the awards:

  • Best Narrative: “Amy” by John Craig de Guzman (De La Salle College of Saint Benilde)
  • Best Narrative: “Mission Accomplished” by Eidref Kristin Faith Magpayo (Centro Escolar University – Malolos, Bulacan)
  • Honorable Mention for Best Documentary: “Who’s Behind the Trumps Effigy at the ASEAN Summit in Manila?” by Che de los Reyes (Ateneo de Manila University)
  • Honorable Mention for Best Documentary: “Puti (White)” by Jerald Yucot (University of Makati)
  • Best Documentary: “Recto” by John Paul Soriano (UP Film Institute)
  • Honorable Mention for Best Experimental Film: “Diwa” by Ma. Daniella Louise (UP College of Mass Communication)
  • Honorable Mention for Best Experimental Film: “En Route” by Anna Canas-Llamas (UP Los Baños)
  • Honorable Mention for Best Animation: “Beautiful Soul” by Edmund del Rosario (University of Makati)
  • Honorable Mention for Best Animation: “Kapit” by Donnie Ray Ipan (University of Makati)
  • Best Animation: “Kinalimutan Natin ang mga Bata” by Gilbert Baldoza (UP Film Institute)
  • Best Interactive Multimedia: “Hide and Seek” by Nur Anis Zulaikhabinti Ahmad and Che Mat Ruzinoor (School of Creative Industry Management and Performing Arts, Universiti Utara Malaysia)
  • Honorable Mention for Best Public Service Announcement: “PWD Sensitivity Video” by Lynda C. Garcia and Nancy Concepcion Galang (Upholding Life and Nature (ULAN))
  • ASEANnale Special Jury Award: “Pipo” by Richard Legaspi (University of the East, Caloocan)
  • ASEANnale Best Film: “Recto” by John Paul Soriano (UP Film Institute)

A UPOU employee who is a current graduate student at UPLB, Anna Canas-Llamas, was awarded an Honorable Mention for Best Experimental Film for the entry “En Route,” which was created with UPOU colleagues, Edison Sevillo, Christian Guevarra, Eubelle Gonzales and Lovelyn Petrasanta.

This biennial event is a product of the collaboration of the University of the Philippines Open University, Commission on Higher Education (CHED), U.P. Diliman Asian Center, the UP Diliman College of Mass Communication, TVUP, International Communication Society and the University of the Philippines System, in collaboration with the UP Open University Foundation Inc.(UPOUFI).

UP Open University is one of the institutions in the ASEAN region which offers programs related to ASEAN Studies such as Graduate Certificate in ASEAN Studies (GCAS) and Master of ASEAN Studies (MAS), graduate programs under the Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS). Dr. Jean A. Saludadez who is the current Program Chair of the GCAS and MAS programs, also participated in the event as the Director of the International Symposium on ASEAN Studies (ISAS).
