The opening of the new academic year awaits the 3,894 registered graduate and undergraduate students this Saturday, 25 August 2018, at the UP Open University (UPOU). For UPOU students, this does not mean travelling to its headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna or booking dorms beforehand. It means finally accessing UPOU’s virtual classroom, MyPortal, and getting to know classmates, professors and the requirements for their specific online course. This start of the Academic Year 2018-2019 is a brand new chapter for some — the excitement of meeting new friends from all over the world or the mere feeling of independence. For others, it’s a continuation of hard work and dedication to their studies. Whether it means adjusting to the online education amidst the temptation of social media, the juggle of graduate studies and motherhood, or a step towards that dream college degree, it simply means taking the opportunity to learn. To cope with this new chapter, BAMS continuing student, Keizer Ancajas and MDC continuing Student, Richard Bulanhagui shared six simple but important tips to help UPOU students have a better school term in an OpenUPConnect.com blog contribution.

  1. Go though your course guide. You will have an easier time getting over your requirements by knowing what the course expects you to learn without you stressing to memorize everything in great detail.
  2. Take notes. It’s hard to absorb a twenty-page reading material about the world’s history in one go.
  3. Set up a calendar. Set up an agreeable time for the activities that you are comfortable doing and compensate to the areas that are quite challenging.
  4. Get yourself a special place to study. Shut the door if there’s any, throw your phone away and limit the things that could distract you away from your work.
  5. Participate in discussion forums. Students can prepare for class activities by engaging in online discussions that are designed to have students get familiar with new topics.
  6. Manage your rest breaks. Manage your brakes the same way you manage your study sessions. Do work hard but don’t forget to rest, don’t let yourself get burned out.

Being familiar with online learning is important to complete this term and eventually complete a degree. And those prepared for the battle are those who finish with flourish. The UPOU website and the microsite of the Office of the University Registrar contains information that will help make the trip more memorable. All students should enjoy the UPOU adventure and make every moment worth the “Iskolar ng Bayan” title. (ACLlamas)
