OpenTalk 29 Discusses Diskarte in Everyday Challenges

(L-R-B) Mr. Hernmar C. Cardiño, Prof. Marie Rose H. Morales, and Dr. Adrianne John R. Galang

UP Open University (UPOU) OpenTalk 29 showcased a webinar about “Anong Diskarte Mo? Malikahing Pagtugon sa Pang-araw-araw na Hamon.” The episode was aired live on 26 January 2023 via the UPOU Networks. Experts from the Pambansang Samahan sa Sikolohiyang Pilipino (PSSP) served as resource persons, namely,  Dr. Adrianne John R. Galang and Prof. Marie Rose H. Morales. The webinar was moderated by Mr. Henmar C. Cardiño, a Registered Psychometrician and Faculty Member at the University of Sto. Tomas.

During the webinar, Dr. Galang and Prof. Morales discussed various psychological approaches that individuals can use to cope with common stressors such as work, family, and relationships. They emphasized the importance of self-awareness, self-care, and positive thinking in dealing with everyday challenges. Dr. Galang, a Balik Ph.D. faculty member at the University of the Philippines Diliman,  discussed creativity or creative response as a daily occurrence and as an everyday resolution to things we do or encounter every day. “In one sense, it is mundane; in another sense, there is something special about it,” he shared. Prof. Morales, an Assistant Professor of the Department of Psychology at UP Diliman, added that creativity and being creative cannot only be related to art or science but also to people’s responses to conditions they face regularly.

Such creative responses could be labeled as “diskarte,” a term, according to Mr. Cardiño, with its deeper meaning, does not have a full English equivalent or translation. Prof. Morales resonated with this that creative people or those with “diskarte” could have a divergent way of thinking. This means that when faced with different circumstances, they have various options or strategies to apply. “Diskarte,” according to Dr. Galang, is a type of creativity that is affiliated with social aspects. It also confides to shy away from the usual norms, making it an interesting element.

Prof. Morales shared that people’s attitudes could influence creative responses. The importance of norms, family cultures, and people’s ability to follow them could influence their way of thinking in applying a “diskarte.” Dr. Galang also explained that exposure to various people of diverse cultures and various fields could also alter or persuade people to learn and do things differently from others.

This webinar is a collaboration between UPOU Networks – Multimedia Center and PSSP. The recorded event is available for viewing via the UPOU Networks Facebook Page.
