OPEN Talk Episode 25 "Ginhawa sa Lusog-Isip at Pagtanda: Pagtugon sa Estado ng Isip at Katawan"

In these changing times, a healthy mind, body, and well-being are a must. Thus, ensuring that all  can be achieved, can also be challenging. The live virtual event of OpenTalk 25 last 13 July 2022, featured resource persons in the fields of Sociology and Psychology, who discussed how people could ensure physical, emotional, and social stability.

The discussion explored people’s understanding in terms of well-being. Dr. Divine A. Salvador, R.Psy., Assistant Professor at the Department of Sociology, UP Diliman, and Clinical Supervisor at UP Diliman Psychosocial Services (PsycServ), shared that everyone has his/her own experiences and journey, thus, people’s approach for each term varies.

Dr. Violeta V. Bautista, R.Psy., Professor Emeritus, Department of Sociology, UP Diliman, and Director at UP Diliman Psychosocial Services (PsycServ) expounded that well-being is not only an individual reflection, but it is also the total experience of the majority. As such, it is explored through the works and lives of our heroes in the past.

People’s ability to give and to receive from others also contributes to their well-being, as shared by Dr. Michelle G. Ong, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, UP Diliman.

Mental health or mental well-being has grown to be a priority in the Philippines. Dr. Bautista shared that mental health issues are relevant in the country, given the low quality of human life and the challenges of living in a third world country.

Owning one’s feelings and accepting them can be a first step towards better well-being. “There is nothing wrong with feeling,” said Dr. Salvador. Acting according to one’s internal struggle can ease difficulties. Dr. Ong furthered that interest in well-being was apparent long before the Covid-19 pandemic. The health crisis sparked it to be given a new light.

The event was hosted by the UPOU Multimedia Center and was moderated by Dr. Eda Lou Ochango, Assistant Professor at the Far Eastern University and a Board Member at the Pambansang Samahan sa Sikolohiyang Pilipino (PSSP).

The recorded version of the live event can still be accessed via the UPOU Networks – Multimedia Center Facebook Page
