The UPOU Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS) in commemoration of its 20th anniversary organized a tree-planting activity last 5 December 2024 that underscored the Faculty’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
The tree-planting activity is one part of the three-part program for the Faculty’s 20th anniversary celebration. The activity’s goal was to reinvigorate the tree population within the vicinity of UPOU after the effects of recent severe tropical storm (international name: Trami) Kristine and super typhoon Pepito (international name: Man-yi), during which a number of trees were felled and uprooted.
The program was opened by the Dean of FMDS, Prof. Joane V. Serrano where she mentioned the importance of continuing efforts like this to further contribute to the biodiversity around the university vicinity and to help in mitigating the effects of natural disasters like the past typhoons, in support of the Sustainable Development Goal 13 – Climate Action. Asst. Prof. Karl Abelard Edberto Villegas, Jr. also shared about the tree species to be planted during the event, explaining their strategic placements in response to the typhoon’s impact.
Two Bagauak-Morado or Starburst saplings (Clerodendrum quadriloculare) were planted in the island near the UPOU gate and five Paraiso/ Bagalunga saplings (Melia azedarach) were planted along the Centennial Center for Digital Learning (CCDL) Road.
The tree planting activity was attended by UPOU officials – Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration Prof. Jean A. Saludadez, University Registrar Asst. Prof. Luisa Gelisan, Office of Public Affairs Director Assoc. Prof. Myra Almodiel, and FICS Dean Assoc. Prof. Diego Maranan, and the FMDS faculty and staff.
