The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS) conducted the first FICS MeetUPs. Knowing the importance of transferring knowledge (practices, lessons learned, procedures/processes, etc.), this activity aims to empower FICS staff members as well preserve the culture of FICS and ensure the continuity of its best practice.

FICS MeetUPs are quarterly get-together of FICS administrative staff and research assistants where sharing of updates are done. MeetUPs also serve as venues for evaluating completed FICS activities and planning forthcoming events. Another feature of this activity is the sharing of knowledge wherein specific topics are pre-determined and the staff themselves serve as the resource speakers.

For this quarter, FICS MeetUPs featured the following topics handled by the FICS staff:

  • Basic Civil Service Rule: Ethical Standard, Tardiness and Leave by Jennifer Pareja
  • Basic Civil Service Rule: Dress Code by Rachel Bautista

Managing your References: Introduction to Mendeley by Patricia Calora
This knowledge sharing activity also aims to promote trust, social norms, expectations and obligations among the participants. Likewise, it aspires to positively impact the knowledge generation within the group, while consequently having a positive impact on the FICS’ intellectual and social capital.

Anchoring this activity with the ideas of Alavi and Leidner (2001) that “the deployment of knowledge management system has been proven to effectively resolve cultural and organizational issues”, this activity would help the staff to do their tasks easily and consequently enable them to carry out more productive works in the future. This will also ensure the continuity of FICS’ undertakings despite the unavoidable staff turnover. (Emely M. Amoloza-FICS)
