The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) welcomed the new Director of the Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS), Asst. Prof. Ana Katrina Marcial. Her appointment took effect on 1 October 2018 and will end on 30 April 2019. Prior to this appointment, she also served as Program Development Associate of the same office from 1 February to October 2018.

Asst. Professor Marcial, fondly known as “Kitchie” to many of her friends and colleagues, obtained her Master of Arts in Education (Language and Literacy Education) in 2012 from UPOU. She served as Assistant Faculty under the UPOU Faculty of Education (FEd) starting 2013.

Under FEd, she has handled Program Chair positions, first for the Associate in Arts program from June 2014 to May 2015, then for the Diploma and Master of Arts in Language and Literacy Education from January 2015 to present. Besides teaching and handling administrative positions, Asst. Prof. Marcial has also been tapped to develop learning materials used for UPOU courses and massive open online courses as well for courses under the General Education Curriculum of the UP System. She co-authored three of the textbooks for Senior High School subjects under the K-12 curriculum in the Philippines which were printed in July 2018. She has also presented research studies in conferences and published several journal articles.

Asst. Prof. Marcial has a long list of public service and extension work as resource person, speaker and facilitator for workshops in and out of UPOU. Her latest engagement was with IBON Foundation, Inc.’s Teacher Orientation and Training where she served as facilitator and resource person for the training workshops held in February and September of 2018.

As Director of OASIS, her plans include a proposed restructuring of the office to establish more distinct and streamlined programs that will provide services, namely, (1) Course Module Development and Quality Assurance of Course Materials, (2) Basic Training, (3) Layout and Publication, and (4) Materials Production.
