ICODeL Pre-Conference

The 5th International Conference on Open and Distance eLearning (ICODeL 2023) will feature the facets of Micro-credentialing in a special Pre-Conference Session titled “Opportunities of Micro-credentials in Higher Institutions.” This will happen on 21 August 2023, Monday, 1:00 -5:00 PM at the UPOU Centennial Center for Digital Learning (CCDL) Auditorium, Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines. 

What are micro-credentials, and how do micro-credentials affect the education landscape? These are only some of the questions that will be answered during this pre-conference, which is open now for registration but only for a limited number of participants. 

The pre-conference is a half-day event that will be composed of four sessions that will delve into the various issues and concerns on Micro-credentials. One session will be handled by Prof. Carlos Delgado Kloos from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, an expert in education technology, the Chair of UNESCO’s “Scalable Digital Education for All” program, and the promoter of digital micro-credentials in Spain. He will speak about “Linking Online Courses to Micro-credentials Ecosystem,” which will happen in the second half of the pre-conference. 

Dr. Melinda dela Peña Bandalaria, Chancellor of UP Open University (UPOU) and lead expert in Micro-credentials in the Philippines and the Asian Region, will facilitate the Pre-conference Workshop 1. She has spoken together with other  experts at the “Micro-credentials in Thai Higher Education” in July 2022 and at the Open University of Japan International Conference in 2022 for her paper titled “QA for OERs and Micro-credentials: Towards Inclusive Lifelong Learning.” 

Other topics that will be discussed will include “Micro-credentials: Definition and Role in the Global Landscape” by Dr. Joane V. Serrano, Dean and Professor of the UPOU Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMdS); “Issues and Prospects of Offering Micro-credentials in the Philippines: The Case of UP Open University” by Dr. Primo G. Garcia, UPOU Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Professor at FMDS; and “MICRO-credentials for Lifelong Learning and Employability: Building Capacities for Developing Agile Educational Interventions in Southeast Asian Universities (MICROCASA)” by Dr. Dennis B. Batangan and Dr. Marites C. Guevarra, Professors at the Ateneo School of Government, Ateneo de Manila University, And Prof. Peter A. Sy, Associate Professor at UP Diliman. 

Registration for the pre-conference is on a first-come, first-served basis for a fee of Php 1,500.00. This training session on micro-credentials is an on-site/in-person/face-to-face activity and will be available to those who will register and pay the conference fees through tricon.upou.edu.ph.

ICODeL 2023 is part of Tri-conference 2023 which will be held from 21 to 25 August 2023, organized by UPOU in collaboration with the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), UPOU Foundation, Inc. (UPOUFI), and the Philippine Society for Distance Learning (PSDL).  The Tri-conference includes the ICODEL 2023, International Symposium on Education and AI Convergence (ISEAC 2023), and the ASEANnale, which share the same theme: Sustainability in Education: Intersections, Ideation, Innovations.
