The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) honored exemplary employees with the 2018 Gawad Chancellor Awards during the UPOU 23rd Anniversary celebration on 26 February 2018, at the CCDL Auditorium, Los Baños, Laguna.
The UPOU Gawad Chancellor Awards are given in four categories: Administrative personnel for non-supervisory level, Administrative personnel for Supervisory level, the Research Extension and Professional Service Staff (REPS), and the Faculty members. These employees are honored for their admirable professional qualities and innovations that have recognizable impact in the university's community and operations in the past three years.

The Gawad Chancellor Award for the Outstanding Administrative Personnel (non-supervisory) was given to Ms. Gloria Boncodin, an Administrative Assistant from the Human Resource and Development Office (HRDO). Ms. Boncodin created a filing system that enabled easy retrieval of documents, even by other staff members. She also serves the university well beyond her position through the different committee works assigned her.

The Gawad Chancellor Award for Outstanding Administrative Personnel (Supervisory) was given to Ms. Pura SV. Amoloza. As Chief of the Supply and Property Management Office (SPMO), Ms. Amoloza initiated the development of most of the processes related to procurement which has benefited all the Administrative Officers and Assistants in purchasing properties and equipment for their offices. She has also been involved in extra work through different committee leadership and membership, especially in relation to the physical and logistical needs of various events in the university. Ms. Amoloza works well beyond office hours when necessary and makes herself available to accommodate queries and requests from her colleagues.

The eligibility for the Gawad Chancellor Award 2018 for Administrative Level is open for permanent or contractual or casual employees who have not received the award in the last three years (i.e. 2015-2017), those in full-time service at UPOU for at least three years without a gap in service, those whose performance rating of "Outstanding" belongs to the top 5 for second level (supervisory) and top 10 for first level (non-supervisory), and those with no pending administrative or criminal case.

Mr. Larry Cruz is the recipient of the 2018 Gawad Chancellor for Outstanding REPS. He has previously been awarded the same prestige in 2011. This year, he topped all REPS and was given the award the second time. Mr. Cruz, a University Researcher from the Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS), has a continuing appointment as the Program Development Associate for FMDS Continuing Education Programs, which has become the focus of some of his researches that the university has awarded with several REPS Research Grant.

This award includes all REPS with performance rating of Outstanding for two rating periods for 2017, has not received the award in the last three years and has no pending administrative or criminal case.

The 2018 Gawad Chancellor for Outstanding Faculty was bestowed upon Dr. Joane V. Serrano, an Associate Professor of FMDS, and the current Director of the UPOU Information Office and the Multimedia Center. She teaches and advocates environmental sustainability and open and distance elearning (ODeL) which is seen through the different research projects she leads. These research interests are also the meat of the knowledge she shares in local and international conferences she participates, which has been translated to publications in different books and journals in the field. She is also the current Managing Editor of the Journal of Nature Studies and the editor of FMDS Journal of Management and Development Studies. She has also been appointed as Chair and member of various committee works in the University.

The Gawad Chancellor Award for Outstanding Faculty includes all regular members of the UPOU faculty who are currently in active service, has not received the award in the last three years , has a load of at least 24 units during the evaluation period, has taught for at least two terms during the evaluation period, has at least one scholarly presentation at an academic conference, symposium, or forum during the evaluation period, has been involved in at least one research project during the evaluation period, has at least one scholarly publication in a reputable academic journal within 2016-2017, has been involved in at least one UPOU-organized or UPOU-led extension program or at least one education-related extension work, and has no pending administrative cases.

The awardees were given plaques and a monetary award of P20,000.00. (KBAncajas and ACLlamas)
