The search for the UPOU Committee on Elections (CoE) has begun, and nominations are open from July 15 until July 30. The selection panel that will appoint new members of the independent CoE is composed of the UPOU Office of Student Affairs and the UP Office of the Student Regent. As an independent committee, the Provisional Committee will have no say on the final composition of the CoE and is merely facilitating nominations.

FAQ

1. Who can be nominated?

Any student, as defined by Article III RIGHTS OF STUDENT of the UPOU Students’ Constitution, is eligible for nomination.

Section 1. Definition –
(a) A student is any person admitted to and enrolled in the University or has cross-registered from another constituent University of the Philippines on a regular or part-time basis.
(b) A student shall also include any person who is on an official leave of absence; or has not yet been separated from the University formally through either transfer, graduation, honorable or dishonorable dismissal, expulsion, or expiration

In addition to being a bona fide student, nominees should have a minimum of one (1) semester/trimester residence in UPOU and be in good academic standing. Graduating students should be willing to accomplish an Affidavit of Undertaking as a contingency (should it come to pass that the student graduates before completing all tasks required).

Nominees who have been found guilty of any disciplinary case or involved in acts of moral turpitude shall be excluded from eligibility.

2. Who can nominate?

Any student, faculty, or alumni of UPOU can submit a nomination.

3. What is the role of the Committee on Elections?

Under Article XVII GENERAL ELECTIONS, the CoE will serve as the electoral body for the University Student Council Elections and shall have the full authority to conduct and arbitrate elections. Given that the coming USC elections will be the first since the ratification of the new Constitution, the newly established CoE will also be responsible for drafting the University Election Code.

4. When will general elections be held?

As per Article XVII GENERAL ELECTIONS, Section 1. General elections shall take place at the start of the first semester/trimester of the academic year. There shall be two separate elections for the House of Undergraduate for undergraduate students and for the House of Graduate for graduate students.
Section 3. The schedule of these elections shall be determined by the Committee on Elections but must take place no later than 35 calendar days after the start of the first semester and no later than 28 calendar days after the start of the first trimester of the academic year.
