Shakespeare scholar Professor Judy Celine Ick talks about Digital HumanitiesThe UPOU Faculty of Education organized a faculty forum on Digital Humanities with Shakespeare scholar Professor Judy Celine Ick as resource speaker. The forum was held on 1 June 2016 at the UPOU Multimedia Center Theater in Diliman, Quezon City.
Professor Ick, who teaches at the Department of English and Comparative Literature in UP Diliman and is currently Vice-Chairperson of the Asian Shakespeare Association, gave an overview of Digital Humanities, defined by the Digital Humanities Quarterly as "a diverse and still emerging field that encompasses the practice of humanities research in and through information technology, and the exploration of how the humanities may evolve through their engagement with technology, media, and computational methods."
Professor Ick discussed the forms of Digital Humanities and aspects of Digital Humanities work, and presented some examples of Digital Humanities projects. One of these is her class website, Transmedial Shakespeare (transmedialshakespeare.wordpress.com), which has been well received in the global Shakespeare arena and which has been cited by the Folger Shakespeare Library and the Asian Shakespeare Intercultural Archive. Professor Ick has been invited to be a contributor to two prestigious international Digital Humanities projects, namely, the Global Shakespeare database of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Asian Shakespeare Intercultural Archive of the National University of Singapore. She is also currently leading a UP Emerging Interdisciplinary Research (EIDR)-funded Digital Humanities project.
The forum was organized by the Faculty of Education as part of a series of discussions towards revitalizing UPOU's Associate in Arts program.
