Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University visits UP Open University for Benchmarking Activity

The Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) held a benchmarking activity with the University of the Philippines Open University on 12 May 2022. Their visit to UPOU’s head quarters in Los Baños, Laguna is for the CHED-funded Research, Development, and Extension on Adults Education  

The research team was led by the Chancellor of DMMMSU South La Union Campus, Dr. Joanne C. Rivera; With here are Executive Director of DMMMSU Open University System, Dr. Cristita C. Guerra, staff members, Claudia Denise P. Barbadillo, Christine Joy Ugay, Manny Sobrepena, and Aries Ugay.  The team probed into the current status, trends, framework, and best practices of adult education of UPOU.

UPOU Chancellor, Dr. Melinda Bandalaria, led the discussion and addressed the topic related to delivering adult education through open and distance e-learning. Also present in this benchmarking activity are UPOU Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (OVCAA), Dr. Primo Garcia; Dean of Faculty of Education (FEd), Dr.  Ricardo Bagarinao, and Director of Office of Public Affairs (OPA) Dr. Myra Almodiel.

As part of UPOU’s mandate to enjoin colleges and universities through cooperative programs, Chancellor Bandalaria also introduced DMMMSU’s potential involvement in UPOU’s initiatives such as the revival of the creation of the Consortium of Open and Distance Education Providers in the Philippines, the ICDE Global Advocacy Campaign (GAC) on OFDL for the Philippine leg of the campaign, participation in the pilot testing of the QA Framework/Accreditation developed by Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) and the forthcoming AAOU Conference in November 2022.

Proper safety protocols were observed during this event.

IN PHOTOS: Day 1 of STEAM EDUCATION @ UPOU started off with the opening of STEAM Sparks!: A game-based exhibit. On the same day, the Young Thinkers' Tales: Storytelling and Teachers' Workshop was held. The storytelling sessions were facilitated by Ms. Genevieve "Pinky" Aguinaldo and Mr. Roy Padrid, with the assistance of staff members from the Ugnayan ng Pahinungód UPOU.Concurrently, the teachers' workshop was facilitated by Mr. Michael Telesforo, Science Research Specialist II and Mr. David Castor, Jr., Science Research Specialist I from the DOST-SEI STEM Innovations Unit who discussed topics of The DOST-SEI Storybooks and Overview of the Importance of Storytelling and The Storytelling Process, respectively.For Days 2 and 3 of the event, the UPOU Faculty of Education invites schools around Los Baños and Bay, Laguna to attend the ongoing STEAM Sparks!: A game-based exhibit. Grade 10-12 students within Los Baños and Bay, Laguna are also invited to participate in the Science & Math Circuit, a STEM quiz contest that aims for participants to experience a dynamic and interconnected competition through various areas of science and mathematics. This event will be held on 13 December 2024, Friday at 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM at the Centennial Center for Digital Learning (CCDL) Auditorium and Sandbox, UPOU Headquarters, Los Baños, Laguna.You and your schoolmates may form a team of three (3), as schools may each send in a maximum of two (2) teams of three (3) members.
