Webinar #89

February 25, 2022

“GIYERA SA PANAHON NG PANDEMYA: Apektado ba tayo?”

History teaches us that wars and plagues go together.  Through many centuries, outbreaks of infections have been associated with conflict and vice-versa.  As of this moment of writing, the world waits and watches how events are unfolding in Ukraine where a Russian military build-up has been steadily increasing.  Should the Philippines and its health workers be concerned about  international conflict over and above our concerns with COVID-19?

In this week’s episode of STOP COVID DEATHS, we take a break from clinical discussions and zoom out to look at the bigger global security picture in relation to the pandemic and  flashpoints that could affect us.  War in Europe could disrupt supply chains for energy, food, medicine, causing an increase in prices.  We have OFWs who may wish to be repatriated.  An exodus of refugees from Ukraine to other parts of Europe could make the pandemic more difficult to control.

Without wanting to create unnecessary fear or panic, it is prudent for us to be informed and aware of international events and ways of thinking about what this means for our work in controlling COVID-19. What kind of preparations are needed in the health sector? How can we be on top of the events without being anxious?

Dr. Antonio G.M. La Viña, UP Law Professorial Lecturer on constitutional law, Former Dean of the Ateneo School of Government and Former Environment Undersecretary will be the main presenter on the topic “Giyera sa Panahon na Pandemya: Apektado ba tayo?”.  Reactors and discussants are Former PGH Director and Health Undersecretary Dr. Juan Ma. Pablo Nañagas; and Global Health Expert Dr. Daniel Lising of the UP College of Law. Opening Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Teodoro J. Herbosa, Senior Adviser of the National Task Force Against COVID-19 and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, Philippine General Hospital, while the Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be by Dr. Carmencita D. Padilla, Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Manila.

Join us as we explore larger determinants of health and the pandemic as we come to a better understanding of current global events in relation to COVID-19.

Stay Safe. Stay Healthy. Stay Connected.

Together, we can STOP COVID DEATHS
