“GAGALING PA BA AKO, DOC?

Mga Pangmatagalang Komplikasyon ng COVID-19”

Virtual Grand Rounds

More than a year after the start of the COVID19 pandemic, we now know that some patients have new, recurring, or ongoing symptoms and clinical findings more than four weeks after infection.  Under the broad heading of “post-COVID conditions”, longer term effects can occur even in those with mild or asymptomatic infections.

These conditions post-acute COVID-19, long-term effects of COVID, long COVID, post-acute COVID syndrome, chronic COVID, long-haul COVID, late sequelae, and the research term: Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-COV-2 (PASC). These conditions are being researched, but in general it means that the patients with infection do not return to the usual state of health following a COVID-19 infection.

Psycho-social and mental health conditions are also reported including post-traumatic stress disorders, depression, anxiety and mood changes.  COVID-19 causes multi-organ or systemic effects that are inflammatory in nature and this may create higher risk for individuals with comorbidities such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Some long term effects of COVID-19 treatment or hospitalization have also been noted from intubation, severe weakness and muscular deconditioning from not being able to move while on a ventilator.  Another term that is emerging is “long COVID” characterized by recurring or continuing symptoms even after the infection has cleared.  These include fatigue, “brain fog”, aches and pains, headache, cough, depression, anxiety, among others.

In this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS Virtual Grand Rounds, Post-COVID conditions will be discussed based on a case study from the Philippine General Hospital.  The case will be presented by Dr. Ian Gabrielle Hipol and discussed by Dr. Marishiel Samonte, both from the Dept. of Family and Community Medicine of UP-PGH.  Reactors include Dr. Leonora Fernandez from the Division of Pulmonary Medicine, Dr. Sharon Ignacio from the Dept. of Rehabilitation Medicine, and Dr. Sedric John V. Factor from the Dept. of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine.

Join us as we discuss the complications of COVID-19 that go beyond the infection.

Stay Safe. Stay Healthy. Stay Connected!

Together we can STOP COVID DEATHS!
