UPOU nursing student Valdimir Milaor's video on secure online shopping wins award.Mr. Vladimir Milaor, Master of Arts in Nursing (MAN) student of the UP Open University was chosen as one of the honorary winners of CineMobile 2015 for his video entitled "Virtual Larceny." Cinemobile 2015 was organized by Asia Society for Social Improvement and Sustainable Transformation (ASSIST), an international capacity building organization, through the initiative of DigiBayanihan, a multi-sectoral group of digital literacy champions to bring together all types of initiatives to create bigger impact by empowering communities with digital literacy.
Cinemobile 2015 challenges participants to create a tutorial video no more than 3 minutes in length on specific topics and relate the topics to digital literacy. The contest aims to inspire awareness about basic digital skills and inspire people to train others.
"Virtual Larceny" is a tutorial on how to shop online securely. In an email interview, Mr. Milaor said, "We can almost buy anything online and we've heard a lot of stories of identity and financial theft with unsecured online shopping." Inspired by his love of horror movies, his video tells of real-life horror stories of those who experienced theft online. Having won, he felt very thankful and happy. He was awarded on 12 August 2015 at the Asian Development Bank by Assist Asia's Group managing Director, Mr. Sreenivas Narayanan.
As a UPOU student, he finds it fulfilling to be able to earn a degree efficiently without having to leave his fulltime job as a clinical trainer for a nursing informatics company. He finds studying at UPOU a breather from the stress of his work. According to Mr. Milaor, studying at UPOU makes him feel younger, reminding him of his college days. He advises aspiring UPOU students to see life at a further distance and see that continuing education can define what the future holds for them. (Anna Cañas-Llamas)
