Dr. Merites M. Buot, an affiliate faculty member of the Faculty of Education (FEd), University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU), bagged the Best Presenter Award in Social Science category during the 1st International Conference on Science, Technology and Engineering for Sustainable Development (ICoSTES) held on 10-11 September 2018 at University Islam Malang, Malang, East Java, Indonesia.
Her research paper titled "The Influence of Education in Enhancing Community Wellbeing" focused on identifying the value of education as a sub-indicator in the sociocultural capital dimension. It is needed in community preparation and in determining the community well-being.

ICoSTES is an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration among the ASEAN professionals, academicians and researchers in the fields of basic science, applied science, social sciences, humanities and arts, technology and engineering in promoting sustainable development in the ASEAN region.

Dr. Buot is currently the Program Coordinator of the Professional Teaching Certificate (PTC), a non-degree program offered by the Faculty of Education. She also serves as faculty-in-charge (FIC) and tutor of some of the Physical Education courses of the Faculty such as PE 1 and PE 2 (Hatha Yoga). She is a member of FEd Social and Cultural Committee.

ICYMI: The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) and Technological University of the Philippines (TUP) held a collaborative meeting as part of their partnerships in open and distance learning on 21 November 2024 at the UPOU Headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna. The discussion focused on the planning of programs and initiatives of the universities. The meeting was facilitated by the Office of Public Affairs (OPA) Director Dr. Myra Almodiel, Center for Open and Digital Teaching and Learning (CODTL) Director Dr. Ricardo Bagarinao, and the Quality Assurance Office. TUP delegates were headed by the project leaders for TUP Open University initiative, Associate Professor Julius Sareno and Professor Dr. Julius G.
