Network Diffusion and Technology Acceptance of A Nurse Chatbot for Chronic Disease Self-Management Support

Joannes Paulus Tolentino Hernandez, RN; MAN, a Doctor of Communication (DComm) student of the UP Open University (UPOU) Faculty of Information and Communication Studies(FICS), bagged the first mention in the oral presentation category during the Second International Conference on Technological Competency as Caring in the Health Sciences at Tokushima University, Tokushima, Japan from 17 – 19 August 2018.

Mr. Hernandez presented a theoretical paper titled, “Network Diffusion and Technology Acceptance of A Nurse Chatbot for Chronic Disease Self-Management Support” which discussed the possible acceptability of the ‘Nurse Chatbot’ and its capacity to improve the non-patient care activities of the nurses in health care facilities. This will use artificial intelligence (AI) to facilitate virtual remote care that could possibly bridge the gap between human resource supply and the demand.

Mr. Hernandez shared that “the inception of a ‘nurse chatbot’ and use in virtual care emerged from [our] knowledge management course.” He further showed his appreciation to Dr. Alexander Flor for the learning opportunity and looks forward to the development of the technology through his planned dissertation topic.

As stated by the Mid-range Nurse Theorist and Chair of the event, Professor Rozzano C. Locsin, RN; PhD, FAAN of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at Tokushima University Graduate School (also Professor Emeritus of Florida Atlantic University, USA), the conference “envisioned to advance the study of Technological Competency as Caring in the Health Sciences through research, practice, and sharing of clinical experiences.”

Bettina D. Evio, RN; MAN, lecturer for the Master of Arts in Nursing (MAN) program of the Faculty of Management and Development Studies UP Open University (UPOU) and currently a DComm student, also presented her paper titled, “Technology in Open Nursing Education: Models in Teaching Nursing Research Online.” Another student new in the DComm program is from the UP College of Nursing Manila, Josephine E. Cariaso, RN; MAN, who also presented a paper on the “Use of Standards of Best Practice in Developing Simulation Scenarios in Nursing.”

Other participants from the Philippines included students from the University of the Philippines Manila, Cebu Normal University, Central Philippine University, Saint Paul University, Silliman University, Saint Louis University, Philippine General Hospital, San Beda University, and Bulacan State University.

The Second International Conference on Technological Competency as Caring in the Health Sciences is co-sponsored by Prince of Songkla University, University of the Philippines, Cebu Normal University, Central Philippine University, and San Beda University and is designed to promote technological competency within the health care sciences.
