Constructing Gender in Multimedia contexts brochure

UP Open University (UPOU) faculty and staff members participate in a Conference on Gender and Media on 30 April 2018 at the Bulwagang Balagtas, Ninoy Aquino Learning Center, Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) in Sta. Mesa, Manila.

Asst. Prof. Rameses de Jesus, Director of the UPOU Office of Gender Concerns (OGC), led the group, together with Ms. Anna Canas-Llamas, Information Officer, Ms. Eubelle Gonzales from Multimedia Center, and Ms. Rica Valencia of OGC. Mr. Alex Zamora of the UPOU MC officially covered the event especially the awarding of the Excellence in Communication Award to UPOU former Chancellor Grace Javier Alfonso.

Constructing Gender in Multimedia Contexts: A Conference on Gender and the Media” was organized by the Philippines Communication Society (PCS) with Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), UP College of Mass Communication (CMC), UP CMC Foundation, Inc., Philippine Social Science Council, Philippine Information Agency and the Philippine Press Institute with the support of the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication McDonald’s and Manila Water.

It was a one-day event with three parts. The first part was the awarding of the Excellence in Communication Award to Dr. Grace Javier Alfonso and her keynote speech where she shared her passion for open and distance elearning using multimedia towards gender and development.

The second part was the presentation of researches on communicating gender that were published in the 2017 release of the PCS Review. Studies featured were “Critiquing Gender Roles in Philippine Cultural Dances” by Cheeno Marlo Sayuno of UP Los Baños; “Iconic Performance and the Media: The Case of Kris Aquino” by Mae Caralde of De La Salle University, Manila; and “The Concept of Forever: Women in Long-Distance Relationship with Seafarers” by Thea Pamela Javier of San Sebastian College. The results of the UNESCO-funded project “Mainstreaming Gender Equality in Philippine Media” were also presented by Dr. Diosa Labiste and Dr. Julienne Baldo-Cubelo. The third and final part was the launch of the 2017 PCS Journal and the presentation of the PCS Review ad PCS Post.

Attendance to events such as the Conference on Gender and Media is encouraged among UPOU employees as part of UPOU’s efforts to strengthen gender concerns. (ACLlamas)
