Twelve UP Open University students under the PhD in Education program of the Faculty of Education (FEd), together with their Dean, Dr. Ricardo Bagarinao, and some dissertation advisers participated in the 4th National Research Conference in Science and Mathematics Education held on 27-28 February 2018 at the Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City. The PhD students are scholars of the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI).
Some of the PhD students also presented their research papers in the conference. They were as follows:

  • Ms. Melanie Junio, a Chemistry Education major, presented her paper titled “Influence of Lesson Study on Elementary School Science Teachers’ Pedagogical Content Knowledge on the Nature of Science;
  • Ms. Fely Buera, a Physics Education major, presented “Metacognitive-Creative Problem Solving Method: Effects on Students’ Metacognition, Creativity, Conceptual Understanding and Performance in Physics”; and
  • Mr. Jonny Pornel, a Mathematics Education major, presented “Development of a Model for Teaching Mathematical Research for High School Students.”

Dr. Bagarinao said that the conference, with the theme “Innovations in Science and Mathematics Education for Inclusive Development”, served as a venue for the current DOST-SEI scholars and former scholars to meet and share their research works that may have potential contribution to national development.

The DOST-SEI is UPOU’s partner institution in the PhD in Education program since 1995. The institution provides each scholar matriculation fees; stipend; and IT, dissertation and transportation allowances for six years. (RMRVereña)
