The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) officially opened classes for the 2nd Semester of Academic Year 2018-2019 on Saturday, 26 January 2019. Three hundred ninety four new students were admitted to the 22 degree programs and 1 certification program that opened for admission for both the semestral and trimestral calendars. These are the Associate in Arts (AA), Bachelor of Education Studies (BES), Bachelor of Art sin Multimedia Studies (BAMS), the Graduate Certificate in and Master of in Distance Education (GCDE/MDE) for the trimestral schedule. The Diploma in and Master of Language and Literacy Education (DLLE/MALLE), Diploma in and Master of Social Studies Education (DSSE/MASSE), Diploma in Mathematics Teaching (DMT), Diploma in Science Teaching (DST), Diploma in Research and Development Management (DRDM), Diploma in Land Use Planning (DLUP), Diploma in and Master of Land Valuation and Management (DLVM/MLVM), Master of Environment and Natural Resources Management (MENRM), Diploma in and Master of Social Work (DSW/MSW), Master of Public Management (MPM), and Doctor of Philosophy in Education (PhD) opened for the semestral schedule. The Professional Teaching Certification program, on trimestral schedule, also opened.
These new students were welcomed on 12 January 2019 through an Orientation spearheaded by the UPOU Office of Student Affairs.
As of current date, a total of 3371 students have already enrolled but the Office of the University Registrar (OUR) Registration Section predicts the number to still slightly increase to include the number of late registrants and registration for residency.
Unlike the 1st Semester/Term of each academic year, the admission and enrollment numbers during the 2nd and 3rd/Midyear terms are relatively low. A number of UPOU programs have opted to admit new students every 1st Semester/Trimester for several reasons, such as preventing below-minimum class sizes and minimizing difficulties in tracking, monitoring and evaluation of individual students. For 1st Trimester/Semester AY 2018-2019, UPOU admitted 1293 new students to 30 programs. A total of 3974 students were enrolled for 1st Trimester/Semester. (ACLlamas)
