The faculty and staff of the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS), University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) successfully held their strategic planning meeting from 23-24 September 2024 at the Ace Hotel, Pasig City. They convened to welcome new faculty members, discuss urgent issues, and prepare for leadership changes. The meeting also aimed to strengthen the camaraderie among faculty and staff.
The first day’s discussions highlighted various opportunities for advancing each of the faculty’s seven programs. FICS Dean, Dr. Diego Maranan, facilitated the faculty members’ exchange of ideas and insights. Interconnections between teaching, research, and public service surfaced as the discussions progressed throughout the meeting. Key points for review and updates across programs were identified, aligning with the evolving needs of open and distance e-learning (ODeL) in the context of FICS.
Part of the discussions include the ongoing updating of the DComm Program curriculum, reviewing and updating the MDC Program curriculum, and the development of a new program on Data Science. The creation of various research labs was also explored, considering the faculty members’ different specializations and interests, with the aim of potential collaborative work among faculty and students.
In addition, the FICS’ faculty identified public service in the context of technology and education as the potential central focus of FICS’ extension efforts. FICS Professor and Chancellor Dr. Melinda Bandalaria encouraged the faculty to align their individual advocacies with UPOU’s priorities to enhance the impact and sustainability of public service initiatives.
In between sessions, icebreaker activities revealed the faculty members’ personal turning points that inspired them to pursue their specializations, and memorable, heartwarming student encounters that encouraged them to persist in what they do. A reflective question on where the duty of care begins and ends was also posed to the faculty and staff for contemplation.
The meeting wrapped up on a high note, leaving the faculty inspired by the collaborative discussions and excited to move forward. With clear goals for curriculum updates, research initiatives, and meaningful public service, FICS is well-prepared to continue advancing open and distance e-learning while meeting the needs of students and the wider community.
