UPOU Alumni Brings Loyalty and Passion Across Borders

Mike Clester Perez, a Product Quality Engineer based in Greater Manchester, United Kingdom, is an alumnus of the Diploma in Research and Development Management (DRDM) and Master of Research and Development Management (MRDM). He got his Master’s degree in 2023, as a lone and pioneer graduate of MRDM, and was awarded Dean’s Lister. 

Born and raised in San Pablo City, Laguna, Mike dreamed of being a UP student. Due to personal circumstances, he pursued his bachelor’s degree elsewhere but this did not hinder him from pursuing his dream. In 2019, he finally took the first step in achieving his goal by applying to the DRDM program at the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU). Since then, Mike has been a loyal UPOU student and alumnus, finishing his MRDM degree and currently pursuing Doctor in Sustainability (DSus). His UP dream is made possible despite being a professional overseas.

Mike is persevering. He aspires for more possibilities and opportunities, so taking a graduate degree was his way. Aside from opening him up to more opportunities, he took research and development management studies because part of his plans involves shifting to a more managerial career path. His academic journey at UPOU has helped him grow professionally. He experienced collaboration and learned the proper ways of writing and doing research, all of which are relevant to his work as a professional engineer. 

Being a student and a professional abroad also came with challenges. For him, enjoying life abroad, traveling, and exploring things is tempting. There is a tendency to set aside academics. However, he grounded himself and focused on finishing his program. He managed his time well, balancing his work, life after work, and academics. Most importantly, he acknowledged the guidance of his adviser, Dr. Jaine Reyes, who motivated and supported him in finishing his thesis.

His new journey as a DSus student at the university is a testament to his belief that UPOU and this program are the ones that are suited for him. What pushed him to take DSus was his drive to continue the training he had in RDM. His advisers, mentors, and panel members also inspired him to do more and contribute to society and the world.

Mike is indeed a proud and loyal UPOU alumnus. The shifting of his UP Sablay symbolized his journey, lessons learned from UP, and dream turning into reality. It has become part of his identity. Being a UPOU alumnus meant that he would have the responsibility of carrying honor and excellence wherever he went. He is passionate about giving back to his alma mater and encourages other alumni to do the same, no matter how big or small.
