Thomas Edison Dela Cruz found the perfect balance in being a father, a professional, and a student with the help of his wife. To top this all off, he graduated with flying colors with the Graduate Diploma in Research and Development Management (DRDM) degree at the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU).

Despite already having his PhD, his desire to gain more knowledge and learn something more encouraged him to take another degree and enroll in UPOU. It was during the pandemic that he enrolled in DRDM. This circumstance forced him to bring both his work and studies at home. He had to balance caring for his kids, working, and studying. For Thomas, this was the most challenging part of her academic journey. Thomas overcame this challenge because he had his wife by his side. His wife understood why he was doing all these things, so she helped him by being there for their kids whenever he was cramped with his work. With the support given by his wife, he was able to manage all his responsibilities and eventually obtain his UP Sablay.

UPOU helped Thomas grow professionally, especially in research. With the lessons he learned in his degree, he was able to lead his research group. He had a deeper understanding of the research process and the intricacies of doing research and managing research activities. Working with his fellow DRDM classmates was memorable for him. Engaging with them gave him different insights, understandings, and perspectives in academics and life.

He advises future students of UPOU to learn how to balance their lives. Time management is crucial in UPOU’s learning mode. One should find time to study without neglecting responsibilities at work and family.

Thomas proves that being a father and a provider helps him continuously learn new things and improve himself professionally. His experience also shows that one should get all the support to succeed. Thomas truly shows that he is a lifelong learner. In the future, he plans to return to UPOU and enroll in another degree.
