A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) and Guimaras State University (GSU) to strengthen their partnership and collaboration in providing accessible and quality education. The signing took place on 26 June 2024, at the Audio-Visual Room, UPOU Headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna.

The signing ceremony was attended by Dr. Melinda dela Peña Bandalaria, UPOU Chancellor; Assoc. Prof. Myra C. Almodiel, Director, OPA; Asst. Prof. Luisa A. Gelisan, University Registrar; and Ms. Margaret Jarmin-Suarez, Program Development Associate for Institutional Linkages from UPOU. Representing GSU were Dr. Lilian Diana B. Parreño, President; Dr. Erly M. Martir, Dean of the Graduate School; Dr. Ruby Catalan, Director of the GSU Open University; and Dr. Simon Cainday III, Coordinator for External and Industry Linkages.

The forged partnership centers around joint academic activities such as lectures, workshops, and training sessions aimed at enhancing educational experiences and facilitating knowledge exchange between the two universities. Additionally, it encompasses faculty and student mobility programs designed to promote cross-institutional learning and collaboration.

The university heads highlighted UP’s Strategic Plan 2029, underscoring its role in advancing national growth and sustainable development. They eagerly anticipated a collaborative discussion on how they could mutually contribute their expertise to achieve their shared goals. This demonstrates their proactive efforts to utilize their strengths for the betterment of their university and society.

The MOU signing underscores UPOU’s dedication to fostering collaborations and forging connections with local and international institutions. Furthermore, UPOU emphasizes the significance of partnerships and the diverse expertise it can contribute in collaboration with its partners.
