UPOU Welcomes Students from UPIS

The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) welcomed students from the UP Integrated School (UPIS) as part of their Career Orientation Trip. This event aimed to help Grades 9, 10, and 11 students of UPIS understand the various program options available at UPOU and explore different career paths related to those programs. This was held on 19 February 2024 at the CCDL Auditorium, UPOU Headquarters, Los Baños, Laguna.

A total of 306 UPIS students participated in the Career Orientation, with 104 students from Grade 9, 97 from Grade 10, and 105 from Grade 11. The students were divided into three batches to facilitate the sessions.

The program began with a welcome address from Dr. Primo G. Garcia, UPOU Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. UPOU officials were also present at the event, including Dr. Charisse T. Reyes, Dean of the Faculty of Education (FEd); Dr. Diego S. Maranan, Dean of the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS); Dr. Emely M. Amoloza; Program Chair for the Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia Studies Program under FICS; Asst. Prof. Tricia C. Ascan, Program Chair for the Associate of Arts in Digital Entrepreneurship (AADE) and representative of Dr. Joane Serrano, Dean of the Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS). Also present were Asst. Prof. Ari Luis Halos, FMDS Faculty member, and Dr. Jabez Joshua M. Flores, Affiliate Faculty and Permaculture Expert. Each of the Deans and Program Chairs was given time to orient the students about the different programs offered by each Faculty Office and what career path they could take if they pursued the programs.

The UPOU Office of Public Affairs (OPA), led by its director, Dr. Myra Almodiel, also set up an exhibit of the Immersive Virtual Tours developed in collaboration with the UPOU Center for Open and Digital Teaching and Learning (CODTL) Open and Digital Learning Research Unit such as the UPOU Virtual Campus Tour and the FMDS Perma GARDEN Virtual Tour. Other UPOU offices supported the activity, including the Office of the University Registrar, Office of Student Affairs, and Office of Gender Concerns. Dr. Almodiel and Ms. Anna Cañas-Llamas from OPA served as the moderator and host.

With that, the university hopes to inspire students to consider choosing UPOU in their college application. This event served as a platform for UPOU to fulfill its mandate under RA 10650, also known as the “Open Distance Learning Law,” by sharing information about its programs and practices with UPIS students.
