UPOU Wellness and Healthy Lifestyle Committee Spearheads Flu Vaccination for UPOU Employees and Family

The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU),  through the Wellness and Healthy Lifestyle Committee, organized its first-ever onsite flu vaccination event to recognize the importance of being protected from influenza (flu) viruses. This was held on 28 July 2023 at the CCDL Auditorium, UPOU Headquarters, Los Baños, Laguna.  Thirty-three (33) faculty and staff members, along with their family members, availed of the service.

The World Health Organization (WHO) described influenza, also referred to as the flu, as an infectious respiratory disease brought by influenza viruses.  Its distinctive symptoms are the sudden start of a fever, sore throat, runny nose, headache, cough that is typically dry, muscular and joint discomfort, and extreme malaise. This can be transmitted through airborne droplets from the cough and sneeze of a person infected with the virus.

Ms. Angelica R. Pusag, Registered Nurse, and Ms. Margarita B. Rubio, Registered Nutritionist-Dietitian, were present to administer the Fluarix Tetra Quadrivalent 2023, a vaccine indicated for active immunization for the prevention of disease caused by influenza A subtype viruses and type B viruses contained in the vaccine. Fluarix Quadrivalent is approved for use in persons aged six months and older.

The flu vaccine is potent for maintaining public health, preventing disease, and lifesaving measures. The broad use of vaccines improves community resilience, especially among vulnerable populations, by lowering the number of flu cases, hospitalizations, and other repercussions. Taking the influenza vaccine seriously is not just a matter of protecting one’s health but also a duty to protect the health of our communities.

Through this event, the UPOU was able to contribute better health services to the community and ensure that individuals are ready to conquer different persistent and emerging health issues as part of Sustainable Development Goal #3. Additionally, we can anticipate other initiatives from the UPOU Wellness and Healthy Lifestyle Committee to promote the health and fitness of the UPOU Community.

Together, let us unite in efforts to stay informed, get vaccinated, and build a healthier future for our communities.
