University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) Chancellor, Dr. Melinda dela Peña Bandalaria, was recently bestowed the CalamBagong Bayani Award 2023, in honor of her remarkable contributions to the progress of the City of Calamba, exemplifying qualities akin to modern-day heroes and serving as an inspiration to their fellow Calambeños. The award ceremony took place on 16 June 2023, as part of the Calambagong Buhayani Festival 2023, a celebration of the richness and vibrannce of Calamba, Laguna.

Dr. Bandalaria, as the fourth Chancellor of UPOU, is currently serving her third term in UPOU. She has been an ardent advocate of open education and distance learning. In addition to her role as Chancellor, Dr. Bandelaria also holds significant positions in various international educational organizations such as being a member of the Executive Committee of the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) and the ICDE OER Advisory Committee (OERAC). She is also an appointed ambassador of Open Educational Resources of ICDE. She earned her PhD in Development Communication from the University of the Philippines Los Baños and completed her Graduate Certificate in Distance Education at the Indiana University in Bloomington, USA.

The University of the Philippines Open University takes immense pride in congratulating Chancellor Bandalaria for receiving the said prestigious award, the esteemed recognition is a testament to her outstanding abilities and notable contributions to the overall progress not only of the Calamba community but the University as well.
