ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by OpenAI and launched in November 2022 has been making rounds and getting hype from users due to its open availability, cutting-edge performance, and human-like proficiency. In this UP Open University OPEN Talk episode aired on 9 March 2023, scholars and experts from UP Open University weighed in. They explored chatbot performance and how it impacts academic work and research.

Dr. Reinald Adrian Pugoy, director of the UPOU Information and Communication Technology Development Office and faculty member of the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies, shared a brief description of ChatGPT or the Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer, an AI that uses a model of technology based on a deep learning model that assesses and calculates phrases or words.

Dr. Ricardo Bagarinao, Former Dean of the Faculty of Education and Director of the Center for Open and Digital Teaching and Learning (CODTL) furthered the use of ChatGPT in classes and how it can help in the assessment and advanced explanation of certain scholarly topics.

On ChatGPT’s accuracy, Dr. Pugoy contemplates that the AI chatbot could be accurate. However, there is still no formal measurement as to how much. He added that ChatGPT’s showcase of accuracy was about 1) pre-training or guessing the next word based on a given sequence of words and, 2) reinforcement training from human feedback which describes the use of human judges or human intervention in its development.

On using ChatGPT in the education setting, Dr. Bagarinao shared that the institution’s perspective will also be a basis for whether it is being used, must be used, or ethical to use. He added that ChatGPT could be used by students for them to able to gain some insights about the tool and maximize their learning process as the AI bot can provide simplified presentations of topics, theories, or concepts. While this tool can be helpful in scholarly works, Dr. Bagarinao has also opened up that scholars and faculty should also come up with inter-rater to have empirical information to know if the tool can provide information that students may benefit from.

This episode of UPOU Open Talk was organized in collaboration with the UPOU Faculty of Information and Communication Studies. To watch the fruitful and thought-provoking discussions about ChatGPT moderated by Asst. Prof. Mari Anjeli Crisanto, Director of Quality Assurance Office, UPOU, the recorded live event may still be viewed on the UPOU Networks Facebook Page.
