The 14th SyenSaya which was held from 5-7 December 2022, concluded with the Awarding and Closing Ceremonies at the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) Umali Auditorium, led by Dr. Glenn B. Gregorio, SEARCA Director, who delivered the welcome remarks.
Dr. Juanito T. Batalon, Jr., Chair, Los Baños Science Community Foundation, Inc. (LBSCFI) Research and Development (R&D) Awards Committee, and Officer-in-Charge, Office of the Deputy Executive Director for R&D of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARD), announced the winners of the Youth Science Awards. They were the Philippine Agriculture and Resources Research Foundation Inc. (PARRFI), which won the Research and Development Awards (Research Category), and Dr. Aida R. Librero, who won the Award for Socio-Economic Research.
Dr. Batalon, Jr., Dr. Melinda d.P. Bandalaria, President of LBSCFI and Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU), and Ms. Rachelle Cruz of the Department of Science and Technology of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon (DOST-CALABARZON), awarded the following winners:
YOUTH SCIENCE AWARDS
Consolation Prizes, winners of PhP 2,000 from DOST-CALABARZON
- Mr. Jesus Monasterial of Trece Martires City Senior High School, for his work entitled, “Forest Acoustic and Surveillance System Utilizing Tiny ML on Low-Powered Microcontroller for Detecting Illegal Logging.”
- Ms. Maxine Ignacio of Trece Martires City Senior High School, for her work entitled, “Potential Antiviral Phytochemicals of Methanolic Water or Spinach, Ipomea, Aquatica Force, or Extract against SARS COV 2.”
3rd Place, winners of PhP 15,000 and a plaque of recognition from DOST-CALABARZON
- Mr. Lexter Dwayne C. Pacio, lead author, and co-authors, Mr. John Benedict Garcia, and Mr. Joshua S. Burches of Trece Martires City Senior High School, for their work entitled, “Autonomous River Bin (AR Bin): Arduino-Based Solid Waste Collector.”
2nd Place, winners of PhP 20,000 and a plaque of recognition from DOST-CALABARZON
- Mr. June Andre B. Pareja, Mr. Rejean Matthew B. Broas, and Mr. Yvez Andre R. Romero of Tanza National Comprehensive High School, for their work entitled, “Project Agos: RC-Based Prototype Aquatic Vehicle with Microplastic Water Filtration System Simulated with Seawater.”
Grand Prize, winners of PhP 30,000 and a plaque of recognition from DOST-CALABARZON
- Mr. Lemeri Jo Manggit, lead author, and co-authors, Ms. Hazel Kathleen Dawlo, Mr. Ren Gyron M. Dela Cruz, Ms. Colleen Janelle M. Maraña, Mr. Lance Emmanuel D. Po, and Mr. Adrian D. Solis of Calamba City Science Integrated High School, for their work entitled, “NID Tracer: National ID Base Intelligent Contact Tracing System Integrating QR Technology and Automated SMS Notifications.”
PARRFI Research and Development Awards (Research Category)
Ms. Jessica Baroga Barbecio and Dr. Sheryl A. Yap of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) are the sole winners of Php 20,000 and a plaque of recognition from PARRFI.
Dr. Aida R. Librero Award for Socio-Economic Research
Dr. Agham Cuevas, lead author, and co-authors, Ms. Adrian Kiloy, and Ms. Ceptril Mina, for their work entitled, “Role of Cooperative and Technology Adoption for Improved Production and Marketing Efficiency in Dairy Buffalo Farms” study, are the winners of the Php 20,000 and a plaque of recognition courtesy of SEARCA.
The event concluded with the oath-taking ceremony of the new set of LBSCFI officers for the years 2022-2024 and a closing message from Dr. Bandalaria.
